Under the headline “Canadian Expedition” the German scientist and adventurer Harald Paul started on may the 15th from Drachten(NL) with the destination Canada. That this is not a normal journey is shown by the title expedition. It is very unusual to do such a travel with an only 12 meters long steel motor yacht. Crew and ship were extremely challenged. But now after the successful crossing of the ocean it is proved, that quality and reliability of a Smelne Vlet are on a very high level.
On august the 31st the Gipsy Life reached the Canadian coast after travelling 3818 nautical miles. It was a journey under extreme weather circumstances. Starting from Harlingen the course was set via Scotland, the Orkneys, Shetland, Faroer and Island to East Greenland. Passing the notorious Cape Farewell (South Greenland) and further along the west coast of Greenland was the most dangerous part of the journey. Crossing streams, extremely high waves from all directions, pack ice and stormy winds were the challenge of this 467 miles non-stop leg. It took 71 hours with high seas and a permanent heeling between 25 and 45 degrees.
Now ship and crew are nearby the small village of Nain in Canada. Here they will spend the winter, the preparations are already started. The first snow is fallen. Amongst the nature were there live more than 3000 polar bears the Paul family will freezing with their ship. Living on board under such circumstances will be another big challenge. A snow scooter will be the only mean of transportation while a snow height of at least 2 meters is expected.
